In each team’s runner list, each rating is the runner’s season best on the day, from any rated varsity race, and Place is the runner’s place in the virtual meet; the first five places score, and the sixth and seventh, in parentheses, displace.

The ranking is a virtual cross country meet. Its field is the top 30 teams by average, the mean season-best Statistical Rating of a team’s five best runners, shown to 0.1 point on 2022’s K (489.973). Each team’s top seven runners take places by season-best rating, highest first. A team’s points are the sum of its five best places; its sixth and seventh runners take places but do not score, so they push other teams’ runners back. Lowest points rank first; a tie goes to the team whose sixth runner placed better (a team without one ranks below), then the higher average. A team needs at least five rated runners to be eligible and a top-30 average to be in the field; with fewer than seven it is marked thin (29 of 281 eligible teams this season).

Rated varsity runners count, not only the verified runners on the Rankings. A runner with a verified Virginia profile counts. A runner with an unresolved profile counts only with at least one rated varsity race in Virginia that season. A runner with a verified profile from another state does not count. Each runner counts for the school they raced for most. Regional and national finals count for individuals only: NXR Southeast, the Champs, Foot Locker and Brooks South regionals, Nike Cross Nationals, Foot Locker Nationals, Brooks, RunningLane and HXN. Their races stay on the individual leaderboards, but a runner’s team value is their best race elsewhere, and a runner who ran only those meets counts for no team. 399 rated runners who raced in Virginia had no school record on any result, so they count for no team and some teams’ depth is undercounted. Middle-school runners are left out. The virtual meet is scored from observed season bests; it is not a prediction of a real meet. How team rankings work

Statistical Rating. Higher is faster: points = K − adjusted seconds ÷ 3, so 1 point = 3 s; shown to 0.1 point, with a dash below 0. K is set for each sex and season so that our ratings sit on TullyRunners’ scale at meets both systems rated.Rank. Order by points in the virtual meet, lowest first. A tie goes to the team whose sixth runner placed better (a team without a sixth ranks below), then the higher average.Points. Cross country points in the virtual meet of the top 30 teams by average: the sum of the team’s five best places. Lowest wins.Team. A Virginia high school (VHSL, VISAA or independent). Each runner counts for one team: the one they raced for most that season.Average. The average Statistical Rating of the team’s five best runners, each on their season best: it picks the 30 teams in the virtual meet. Higher is faster; shown to 0.1 point.Depth. The team’s rated varsity runners this season. A team needs five to be ranked, and is marked thin with fewer than seven.Place. The runner’s place in the virtual meet, from their season-best rating. The first five places score; the sixth and seventh, in parentheses, take places but do not score.Runner. A rated varsity runner on the team: one with a verified Virginia profile, or with an unresolved profile and a rated varsity race in Virginia that season. A runner verified in another state does not count.Season best from. The meet and date of the runner’s season best, their lowest adjusted time from any rated varsity race. A best from a D or E race is flagged.
